Cable Construction
Conductor
Conductors shall be circular stranded or shaped stranded annealed copper in accordance with IEC 60228. Tinned conductor is also acceptable.
Conductor Screen
Cable 38/66KV & 132/240kv and above shall have a semi –conducting screen over the conductor.
Primary Insulation
Insulation shall be cross-linked polyethylene, (XLPE) with rated 1KV for 400V, 66KV for 63KV, 240 for 230KV cables.
Insulation Screen
For cables 63KV & 230KV and above, the insulation screen shall consist of semiconducting tape and/or layer of extruded semi conducting compound in combination with a metallic layer.
Filler
Where necessary, to obtain circular form of the cables, suitable interstice material such as jute string, preshaped HDP (high density polyethylene), or polypropylene string shall be used.
Materials shall be low smoke and fume (LSF). Cable shall be substantially compacted so that when fitted with a compression gland will provide a gas seal.
Binder
The laid up cores together with the filler shall be lapped with a suitable binder tape.
Bedding
The bedding shall be a lapped combination of two layers of compounded crepe papers followed by one or more layers of compounded fibrous material.
Armour
The armour shall be single wire galvanized round steel and shall be used for all kinds of cables.
Over sheath
The over sheath shall be extruded red poly vinyl chloride (PVC) for 63KV and 230KV cable and black for low voltage and control cables.
