Project News:

After significant government reforms and infrastructure investment, 24-hour electricity has been available on the island since 2005; however there are still frequent power cuts. Nauru’s power supply was provided by diesel-powered generators maintained by the Nauru Phosphate Corporation, however, since its dismantling and government restructuring, the Nauru Utilities Authority (NAU) has taken over responsibility for the power supply. Nauru has struggled with energy conservation and cost-effectiveness, primarily due to extreme government subsidisation, but the installation of prepayment meters and increase in tariffs is meant to encourage conservation. The Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Resources is responsible for energy policy and is looking into the feasibility of alternative energy sources, including a pilot wind power project in Anabar sponsored by the Secretariat of the Pacific Regional Environment Programme.
