Project News:
GRAND CABLE has recently signed a supply contract with a project purchaser in Suriname for the supply of multiple specifications of ACSR conductors and aluminum-alloy aerial service drop cables. This marks GRAND CABLE's first supply achievement in the Surinamese market and represents a further expansion of the company's business footprint into South America.
The ACSR conductors supplied under this contract are manufactured to ASTM international standards, featuring a steel-reinforced core structure that provides a high strength-to-weight ratio and good current-carrying capacity. They are widely used in overhead transmission lines, particularly for long-span applications. The accompanying quadruplex service drop cables, consisting of three insulated phase conductors twisted around a bare neutral messenger, are primarily used to deliver three-phase power from pole-mounted transformers to buildings, with a rated voltage not exceeding 600V. Both product types are commonly used materials in transmission and distribution network construction, suited to local climatic and operating conditions.
Suriname is located in northern South America with a population of approximately 600,000. While the national electricity access rate has reached 100.34%, the country's grid infrastructure faces significant ageing challenges. Suriname's total installed capacity is approximately 510 MW, comprising 37% hydropower, 54% thermal, and only 1% solar. National peak demand stands at 250 MW, with annual generation of about 1,750 GWh. The EPAR grid, which serves the capital Paramaribo and surrounding areas, has seen peak demand rise to approximately 280 MW in 2026, against available generation capacity of only about 254 MW — leaving a shortfall of roughly 26 MW and persistent risks of rotating blackouts. The government aims to achieve stable 24-hour nationwide power supply by 2030 and to increase the renewable energy share to 47%. To this end, Suriname is actively advancing grid upgrades and expansion, including extending 33kV transmission lines to more regions. The ACSR conductors and aerial service drop cables supplied by GRAND CABLE are key materials in this local transmission and distribution network construction. The first order establishes a track record for the company's future participation in power projects in Suriname and neighbouring South American countries.
